Not misunderstood, not complex, not a victim of circumstance—just the monster. The one who destroyed something, the one who caused pain, the one who made the wrong choice. And the uncomfortable reality is this: they are not entirely mistaken. We like to think of ourselves as the heroes of our own stories—justified, wounded, doing our best. But every hero has a shadow. Every wound, if left to fester, eventually learns to bite. Watching Carrington in "All’s Fair" felt less like engaging with fiction and more like confronting an uninvited reflection.

She is portrayed as a complex character who embraces her darker side, yet she is not wholly villainous. Her nurturing relationship with her daughter reveals her softer side, a dynamic I watched with envy. Additionally, her dedication to her legal battles showcases her professionalism; she meticulously focuses on her cases, seeking evidence in places others might overlook to secure her victories.

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Xns6!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fc3922f52-81f0-4eb9-b179-efcf5d1ca2bc_474x549.jpeg" width="474" height="549" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c3922f52-81f0-4eb9-b179-efcf5d1ca2bc_474x549.jpeg","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":null,"height":549,"width":474,"resizeWidth":null,"bytes":null,"alt":"‏carrington lane - It is evident that she is wrestling with unresolved, deep-seated trauma that even her therapists find daunting. Her lifelong pursuit of love and validation is deeply entwined with a history of intense rejection. When Dina, Allura, Emerald, and Liberty choose to leave Carrington behind to establish their own firm, it serves as a painful reminder of past rejections. The situation intensifies when Dina refuses to support Carrington’s partnership at their current firm, propelling Carrington into full beast mode as she battles these emotional triggers.

It was upsetting to see her intense outbursts and the lengths she went to hurt those she believed were causing her harm. I do not think Dina meant any harm; none of them did, but Dina felt the need to protect the firm. I believe older people have a special intuition for detecting malevolence beyond ordinary means. Dina saw through Carrington’s façade and realized she did not have the firm’s best interests at heart.

It is hard not to see parts of ourselves in Carrington. The main distinction might be that many of us do not cultivate our inner darkness to the same extent. I admire how she harnessed some of that energy in her professional life, which greatly benefited her clients. After watching a TikTok about a woman's antics with her ex, I realized that I'm not fully exploring my own potential for mischief. As I wait for season 2, I have been thinking about how I might channel my darker side in a positive way.

Love, Life, and the Creator We Long For — Reflections from Frankenstein

Are there consequences to playing God?

The Emotional Guru

Are there consequences to playing God? I suppose we will never find out unless Oscar dies and returns to life to tell the story.

For some reason, I believed that watching the Frankenstein movie would give me nightmares during a period when I really valued my sleep. I suppose it is best not to overthink things sometimes. Life slowed down, and I decided to give it a try. The images I had seen online had influenced me and created a misleading impression in my mind.

This is yet another film that made a lasting impression on me. It conveyed a multitude of themes, open to interpretation. It illustrates how two truths can exist simultaneously. The scientist perceived the creature as a monster, less than human, consistently referring to his creation as “it” and treating the creature like an animal. In contrast, Elizabeth treated the creature with humanity, and as a result, the creature developed affection for her and cared for her deeply. Oscar attributed the loss of his leg to the creature, but I believe it was a divine punishment for his cruelty.

Viewing the situation from the creature’s perspective, it becomes clear that all he wanted from Victor was a companion, as Victor could not grant him his true desire: death. The creature experienced the agony of death repeatedly, only for his body to heal each time. I cannot fathom such torment. This mirrors our own yearning for death when confronted with life’s painful experiences, yet somehow being unable to end our lives, whether due to unsuccessful suicide attempts or the fear of following through with the act.

Victor’s emotional distance mirrors the way we sometimes reach out to God and receive no response, which can lead to bitterness and a loss of faith in God’s existence. The creature, who never asked to be brought into the world, finds himself grappling with the pain of his existence while constantly seeking love from his creator. This is similar to how we continually seek love and affirmation from our parents when it is not readily given or clearly expressed.

It seems that Victor might have had a form of affection for the creature, evident in certain scenes, albeit in his own distorted manner. It appears he was more proud of his creation than anything else. The creature, however, never sought love in that form. This brings to mind how those around us love us, yet sometimes we fail to recognize it because it is not expressed in our preferred way or love language. Peter and his wife were involved in an accident on their way home from the hospital with their newborn baby. By chance, they collided with another woman, Carrie, who had also just given birth. Both Marrisa and Carrie are left unconscious after the crash, and Peter discovers that their baby has died. He then approaches Carrie’s car and finds her baby crying in the back seat. To spare his wife the heartbreak of losing their child, he decides to switch the babies.

Carrie is absolutely convinced that her child is alive, as she heard him crying while she was unconscious. Driven by this belief, she decides to take matters into her own hands and kidnaps her child in an effort to reclaim him. Her child is her entire world, and she feels she has nothing else to live for.

Peter was responsible for his brother’s disability, but he shifted the blame onto his sister, allowing her to carry the burden of guilt for years. This may have contributed to her turning to drugs.

Peter was at ease maintaining this deception as long as it ensured others relied on him. His comfort with living this lie at the expense of others was profoundly unsettling. He exhibited deep-rooted narcissism, coupled with a manipulative, controlling, and chilling demeanor. It was genuinely a disturbing psychological disorder. When Marissa asked him what he loved most about Milo, and he replied that it was when Milo had nightmares and needed his comfort, it felt deeply wrong. Why would anyone want their child to experience nightmares? This response highlighted his need to feel needed.

Jack Lacy typically portrays irritating characters, but this time he went beyond just being annoying. He revealed the darker side of human nature, showing how we often appear good while serving our own egos. I must reiterate, I am always cautious of overly nice people, as they often have something to hide. Peter deserved the fate he met; Marissa was generous to grant him an easy death after everything he put them through. He destroyed lives for his own gain, and ultimately, it was all his fault.

GOD DID NOT ANSWER

Everyone keeps mentioning how emotional they got watching The Piano Lesson, so I decided to watch it myself and join in on the tears.

The Emotional Guru

Everyone keeps mentioning how emotional they got watching The Piano Lesson, so I decided to watch it myself and join in on the tears. During the service on the evening of the 31st, the pastor spoke about our journey to understand God. He stressed that we can never completely grasp who God is or fully comprehend His ways. This reminded me of a challenging time at work when a colleague asked if I pray; I found their question quite offensive, insensitive, and ignorant.

The more Pastor Avery prayed, the more dire the situation became. Willie Boy was being choked by the specter of his past enslavers, and if Berniece had not begun to play the piano, events might have taken a different turn. Was God absent? Would He allow evil to triumph? We often say that God orchestrates everything for our benefit, but why does He sometimes seem passive in face of terrible occurrences? There are times when suffering feels utterly unjustified. Someone once admitted that their life seemed to worsen with every prayer they offered.

Why was the Bible employed as a tool for colonization, and why is so much of African history, particularly its spiritual traditions, obscured?

Thanks for reading!
